To the west of Leicester is a small village called Ratby, and if you go north from there, you'll reach Martinshaw Woods, straddling the M1. You can walk for miles, if you have a mind to, or if you've left your satellite navigation system behind.

As you stroll through the woods, you can usually hear the sounds of various birds, insects, and the occasional lesser-spotted column of traffic on the motorway.

Records show that the wood was used for grazing in the sixteenth century. The second World War saw many of the trees felled for use in coalmines.
